According to the Environmental Working Group, we ingest up to 10 different pesticides in on our vegetables and we should buy organic as much as possible. Out of the 47 that they have listed, there are fruits and veggies called “the dirty dozen” or top 12 that you should always eat organic. EWG has recently updated their list of foods that you should always buy organic:
THE DIRTY DOZEN
- peaches
- apples
- sweet bell pepper
- celery
- nectarine
- strawberries
- cherries
- kale
- lettuce
- grapes (imported)
- carrots
- pears
(collard greens, spinach, potatoes, green beans, squash, peppers & cucumbers I would still buy organic if I could. They have a 50 or higher rating)
THE CLEAN 15
These veggies, you don’t have to buy them organic. They are not as prone to damage by insects and have the least amount of pesticides!
- onion
- avocado
- sweet corn (frozen)
- pineapple
- mango
- asparagus
- sweet peas
- kiwi
- cabbage
- egg-plant
- papaya
- watermelon
- broccoli
- tomato
- sweet potato
(grapefruit, honeydew melon, cranberries, cantaloupe, winter squash and bananas are close by the clean 15)
